Field Trip – Durham Meadows & Coginchaug River, Durham – Steve Broker

May 24, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

We explore this pristine freshwater marsh and riverine system at four different access points and for target species: (1) Durham Skating Pond, Route 68 (Virginia Rail, Swamp Sparrow, American Kestrel); (2) Frederick White Farm, Durham Fairgrounds vicinity off Maple Street (Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow, Spotted Sandpiper); (3) south Durham Meadows, Route 17 (Virginia Rail, Willow Flycatcher); (4) Coginchaug River, Route 147 (Least Bittern, Virginia Rail, Sora). Along the way numerous other species are to be encountered, including vultures, woodpeckers, flycatchers, vireos, swallows, wrens, wood warblers, and sparrows. This trip is geared in part to photographers, as later afternoon light augments the beauty of the meadows and adjacent agricultural lands. Meet at the Durham Skating Pond gravel parking lot on Route 68 just downhill from Route 17 in Durham.

Leader: Steve Broker, 203-272-5192 (home), 203-747-6843 (cell), or LS.Broker@cox.net
